The nine minute opener to LCD Soundsystem’s third album This Is Happening, Dance Yrself Clean felt stuck in the wrong place, sequenced for hell and giggles by a mischievous sound engineer from amongst the long. long, long list of people James Murphy had pissed off throughout the band’s fractious career.

Even by their standards as bolshy provocateurs, here was a tune minted in the hope of scaring away passers by, a subway ride through light and dark, clarity and confusion, shifting from booming noughties synth pop to strung out art house funk. In short, it’s one of the least likely classic track one, side ones, of the decade and yet even if it’s joke, it still wins.
