Giant Swan – Fantasy Food EP review

They might have taken a name like something from a kids book, but Giant Swan – produers Robin Stewart and Harry Wright – haven’t made Fantasy Food in an effort to appeal to fans of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Released in 2019, their self titled debut album was an excercise in jarring machine noise and off kilter electronica as effected by Fuck Buttons or Blanck Mass and it was definitely not to be played in front of the children.

That gained them recognition enough to tour with amongst others fellow Bristolians Idles but Fantasy Food is very much about coming back into yourself, the duo exploring harder techno surfaces and the hedonism of post-pandemic clubbing; Wright has spelt out their intentions for it clearly with ‘We wanted to write something that doesn’t fuck about.’

It’s not all messy dancefloor sweat and wide eyed hedonism, with the title track beatless and experimentally odd, but on RRR+1 they hit Wright’s exact target destination with a throbbing soup that earns it’s own 18 certificate. You’ll need to stay up way beyond your bedtime to hear it at it’s best.
