Reignmaker – We Go Round EP review

It’s sometimes a cliché to infer that there’s a degree of expectation on bands who come from Liverpool, but for those who favour guitars the city’s heritage does tend to loom large in the rear view mirror.

Formerly school mates, Reignmaker wisely choose to embrace it, citing The La’s as a major influence. They’ve also been championed by scouse bard Jamie Webster and are signed to the Modern Sky label which is home to him and Michael Head.

The four tracks on We Go Round finds them in territory familiar for anyone of an indie rock persuasion, confident opener Find My Own Way deluging listeners with reverb and a proper arms around your mates chorus. But closer listening reveals more substance on the likes of Thirteen’s Fate and Stay Behind, the latter dreamy psych-pop which The Coral have excelled at for so long.

Liverpool’s relationship with it’s musical past is complicated, but shouldn’t be run away from. On We Go Round Reignmaker show they have enough to use it as fuel for taking it with them on a far longer journey.
