Chastity Belt – Live Laugh Love review

Live Laugh Love may seem like an overly bland metaphorical title for a band who previously have written songs called Pussy Weed Beer, Nip Slip and Pissed Pants, but for Chastity Belt it’s very much a thing they’re willing to own.

Together as a quartet since the release of their debut album No Regrets, the quartet’s working relationship has never been stronger, such that the material here which was recorded over three separate session in as many years sounds very much like a cohesive whole.

Don’t be fooled by the title and cover art however; this is not an all-female equivalent to Toploader. Drawing on shoegaze, post-grunge and art-rock the songs here often expose a lyrically personal nerve whilst recalling The Breeders, Warpaint or Bully. At it’s best – Chemtrails, Kool Aid and Tethered’s ocean deep layering – Live Laugh Love‘s empathetic sorority play is a fine alternative to weathering the platitudes of modern day life.
