100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far #92 Soul Glo – Spiritual Level of Gang Shit

Released: 2022

Joining the dots between Soul Glo’s early EP’s The Nigga In Me Is Me and Songs to Yeet at the Sun with their debut for the Epitath label Diaspora Problems was far from straightforward.

The Baltimoreans had previously littered their work with screamo, hardcore, rap and metal references, but took the the opportunity to sculpt them into different shapes. Along with addressing issues across the spectrum from mental health to black on black violence, in front person Justin Pierce they also had a voice with gravity and presence.

Diaspora Problems kept us guessing to the end, rocking as hard as Bad Brains, breaking like Death Grips and on the closer Spiritual Level of Gang Shit stirring in manic funk to the mix as it raced to a wall of death finish. It was impossible to know how they’d got here from there so quickly, but for once it was time to love the destination and forget the journey.
