Released: 2024
For those of us who like to poke the genre once known as Indie with a stick, the twitching body can still kick out the odd perfect jam or two. As proof, first The Tubs’ released their glorious fuzz up Dead Meat in 2023, whilst the following year Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. returned with their second effort Harm’s Way.
Both were indebted one way or another to the movement’s mid nineteen eighties imperial phase. Then under and overground success has led to bands with relatively short lifespans and diverse sounds like The Smiths, Beat Happening and Hüsker Dü being venerated long after their direct influences waned.
Ducks Ltd are a duo of English singer/lyricist Tom McGreevy and Australian Evan Lewis and Harm’s Way sonically was a fine amalgam that brought a 21st century energy to some familiar tones. Breathless and headrushing, The Main Thing went so fast it threatened to catch up with itself, a jangling tidal wave that perfectly encapsulated the joy-from-darkness aesthetic of it’s original players. We’re keeping the stick, too.
