100 Greatest Songs of the 20’s So Far – Confidence Man – Luvin’ U Is Easy

Released: 2022

Why so serious? Sure there plenty of reasons to be down right now, but Confidence Man – visibly anyway a duo of Janet Planet and Sugar Bones – are here to let you know that worrying never got you anywhere.

Maybe it’s all just a matter of knowing your audience. After all, the people out there clubbing now are the children of a generation who spent their summer nights in derelict warehouses necking stimulants of dubious quality, so when on their second album Tilt the Brisbane duo peddled lyrics like ‘Living life on the wild side just like a bear/We’re alive – we’re just animals with beautiful hair’ surprise was the least likely outcome.

It helped that the whole schtick was either by luck or design so perfectly adjacent to both trash and parody. Tilt was made for the people much of the entertainment cogniscenti look down on; bold, hook laden and shamelessly derivative it was executed with an underlying nous that suggested pop geniuses were at work. Luvin U Is Easy could’ve been teleported straight from 1992, pouting out a ravey overtone and bubbling synth bass, the effect like Deee Lite partying with En Vogue with Steps as the house band. Scared to be happy? Don’t worry, Janet’s here.
