It’s always good to know where you are and more importantly, where you want to be. In Adult DVD‘s case they also know what they don’t want to be; indie miserabilists trying to take on the world’s power brokers? Nope, that’s not them. Instead, their long awaited debut album is an exercise in seeing the funny side in the you couldn’t make it up era we’re all stranded in.
Formed by singer Harry Hanson and Greg Lonsdale when the pair met at Leeds’ iconic Brudenell Social Club, Hanson added more to the story with “We don’t take things too seriously, the lyrics have got sillier, the songs have got sillier. We make music for people to enjoy, so let them have a laugh.”
Not that the characters which populate Adult DVD aren’t based on true events enough to be scary – the radicalised online Real Tree Lee being the sort of toxic character many will have had the bad luck to meet – but as IRL, they’re more of a danger to themselves than anyone else. Musically the foreground is a glorious mess of synths, mirror ball post punk and nineties’ rave squelch, Cowboy On Aisle Three, Ghillie suit and closer Rolling Faces all satisfyingly weird disko gruves for Dark Arches parties. It’s good to know where you stand, and Adult DVD are five minutes away from yours in an Uber, bringing armfuls of booze and shitloads of tunes. Do wait up.
