Squid – Town Centre EP review

Squid are a quintet whose members met at Brighton University and are the latest in a line of British bands who’ve come to prominence by making music which has no real obvious reference points in the country’s recent past.

This four track EP is both wonky and wonderful, restlessly never sounding the same from one phase to the next, from the garage-meets indie fuzz of Match Bet to The Cleaner’s sketchy Talking Heads-style mania. There’s no formula as such, just a hive of influences and a dedication to ignoring simple pop tropes. It seems the meek have finally inherited the earth.
