Love makes the world go round but it can also make it feel like it’s about to end: whilst most of the initial speculation around Thinkin ‘Bout You was whether the object of Frank Ocean’s affection was male or female, lurking beneath the surface was something more revelatory.
Disarmingly open, through it’s simple pads, shuffling air and the singer’s aching falsetto the lines of contemporary R&B were being redrawn as we listened, a downtempo but uplifting new identity that along with the rest of his debut album channel Orange would serve to reignite it as a creative force. It also reminded us that it’s not important who you love, but how.
