There’s something for most outsiders, non-conformists and lovers of the past in The Lemon Twigs. Brothers Michael and Brian D’Addario have been weaving an increasingly retro pop spell since 2023’s Everything Harmony and continued via A Dream Is All We Know, released a year later, with their elfin profile and delicate melodious twists proving an attractive shell for anyone who didn’t objectify progress.
This notwithstanding, the title of their latest release feels like it’s modeled on some ancient Haight-Astbury graffiti; the truth however is it’s rooted very much in the insanity of the present, with sibling Brian admitting that ‘Now is a time of insanity..you really have to hold onto your own mind if you don’t wanna lose it’.
A darker backdrop than their often candy covered surfaces might present then at first glance, but Look Out For Your Mind! is better for it, with Bring You Down having at it with the tech bros, all over tones the Wilsons would’ve dug. Sure, there’s still a reverse British invasion vibe you might expect on You’re Still My Girl, My Heart Is In Your Hands Tonight and I Just Can’t Get Over Losing you, but that’s the deal, really and you’d feel bummed if it wasn’t fulfilled in some way. Freaks of the nicest kind can still groove their weirdness to the closer Your True Enemy, but it’s on Nothin’ But You that the brudders really nail everything, a track for the ages and objectively one of their best to date. Something for everyone? Not quite, but The Lemon Twigs are getting there.
